Using the sample data set entitled "TreeData.txt" found in the CS130 Public directory and SPSS, report in a Word document called yourlastname.doc the answers to each of the following questions. When asked for, place a graph into your document with the appropriate explanation.

Problem #1:

  1. Which variable is dependent? Why? (Give detailed explanations for full credit.)
  2. Which variable is independent? Why? (Give detailed explanations for full credit.)
  3. Construct a Scatterplot showing the independent variable on the x-axis and the dependent variable on the y-axis.
  4. Using SPSS, perform a linear regression and paste the Coefficient table only in your Word document.
  5. Transfer the TreeData dataset into Excel and perform a linear regression. Paste the properly labeled graph including the equation and R^2 value from Excel into your Word document.

Problem #2:

Consider the calories burned by women and men over a 24-hour period of time as follows:

  1. Using SPSS v12, copy and paste the descriptive statistics descriptives about the calories burned for the entire dataset into your Word document.
  2. Using SPSS v12, copy and paste the descriptive statistics descriptives about the calories burned for women and for men (i.e. separate results for each group) into your Word document.
  3. You are to find if the calories burned by women is significantly different than the calories burned by men. What hypothesis test will you need to perform to find this result? Explain your answer fully.
    1. State the NULL Hypothesis for the statistical test you selected.
    2. Paste in the results of the statistical test using whichever package you selected.
    3. State your conclusion.

Problem #3:

Using the Web, I would like you to research and find any set of data of your choosing that lends itself to Regression testing. Describe the data and why you selected it, create a SPSS dataset using this data, and do a regression analysis of your data. Paste in charts and equations to aid in your explanation.

Place your Word document and all datasets in a folder called your PUNet(e.g. khoj0332). To be considered on time, this folder must be placed in the CS130 Drop Box by 6pm on the date in which the assignment is due. Remember, answering questions out of order will result in a significant loss of assignment points.
