Relevent Background: My graduate research for both my M.Sc and Ph.D. were in the
areas of natural language processing. For my Ph.D., I developed an Arabic part-of-speech
tagger using language rules and Hidden Markov Models (HMM's). Therefore, I am very familiar
with this area of research. I also have the necessary training and testing data that will be
used to train and test the neural network tagger.

I am also quite familiar with neural networks as I took a course on neural networks while I was
in graduate school.

List of courses taken that are relevant to this project:
The following courses are directly relevant to this project:
CS 150 – Introduction to Computer Science I (C++ Programming)
CS 250 – Introduction to Computer Science II (C++ Programming & Visual C++)
CS 300 – Data Structures
CS 310 – Theoretical Computer Science

The following are all the other CS courses that I have taken. Although these may not
be directly relevant to the project they have provided me with a good CS and
mathematics background:
CS 315 – Introduction to Human Computer Interaction
CS 320 – Assembly Language Programming
CS 360 – Databases
CS 360 – Code Theory and Cryptography
CS 430 – Computer Architecture
CS 480 – Principles of Compiler Design
Math 226 & 227 – Calculus I & II
Math 240 – Discrete Mathematics
Math 306 – Linear Algebra
Math 324 – Numerical Analysis

Other information:
I am interested in the possibility of attending graduate school in Computer Science upon
completion of my undergraduate degree. Conducting research in graduate school and
more narrowly focusing my interest in the broad field of Computer Science is appealing.
I hope that the opportunity to conduct some significant research at the undergraduate
level will help to reinforce my interest in attending graduate school.

Other information:
Participating in this research project will broaden my knowledge of the field of Computer
Science. Learning about various aspects of the field will help me to decide if graduate
school will be appropriate for me to attend after completing my undergraduate studies.
